Different Activities Need Different Orthotics
Different shoes serve different parts of your life, work shoes, running shoes, and everyday sneakers all fit differently, so one pair of orthotics rarely performs the same in all of them. Patients who are on their feet all day at work often need a different level of support than they do for a run or a workout, and some end up with a work pair and an athletic pair for exactly that reason. Dr. Mason can talk through which activities matter most for you and what that means for how many pairs actually make sense.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do custom orthotics cost?
Cost depends on your specific needs and is determined after your evaluation, since custom orthotics are a prescription item made for your feet, not a fixed retail price. Insurance, HSA, or FSA may cover part or all of the cost depending on your plan, and our staff can walk through your options before you commit.
How do custom orthotics work?
Your foot has three arches, on the inner edge, the outer edge, and across the middle, that together form what’s sometimes called the plantar vault. Custom orthotics are built from a scan or impression of your own feet, ideally while you’re standing and bearing weight, to support all three arches at once rather than cushioning one point of contact. Since your feet are the base your whole body’s alignment builds on, that support can carry up the chain into your ankles, knees, hips, and spine, not just your feet.
How are custom orthotics different from store-bought insoles?
An over-the-counter insole is mass-produced in standard sizes and offers generic cushioning under one part of the foot. A custom orthotic is shaped to your specific arch structure and movement pattern and supports the whole foot, which is why it holds up longer and does more than temporary comfort.
Can custom orthotics help with knee, hip, or back pain, not just foot pain?
Yes, that’s one of the more common reasons patients get fitted. Published research, including a study in Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, has linked custom orthotics to real reductions in chronic low back pain, with larger improvement reported when combined with chiropractic adjustments. Dr. Mason evaluates whether an uneven foundation at your feet is actually part of what’s driving your knee, hip, or back pain before recommending orthotics.
How long does it take to get used to custom orthotics, and how often do they need replacing?
Most people need a break-in period, easing into longer stretches of wear rather than switching over all at once, with full benefit typically showing up after about 4 to 6 weeks of regular use. Most patients need a new pair every 1 to 3 years, though visible wear, new discomfort, or a change in your condition are good reasons to have them reassessed sooner.
Will one pair work in all my shoes?
Not usually. Work shoes, athletic shoes, and casual shoes all fit differently, so one pair often doesn’t perform the same across all of them. Many patients end up with more than one pair for the shoes or activities that matter most to them.
Do custom orthotics need to be trimmed to fit my shoes?
Sometimes. Depending on the shoe, a small trim to the toe area can help them sit correctly, and Dr. Mason’s team can walk you through it or do it for you at your fitting so they fit properly from day one.
